OTTAWA – After the power company and tree trimmers descend on a community to help, their can unfortunately be another group that arrives to do harm. Authorities warn residents that home repair scammers may arrive and try to prey upon those most in need. Do not agree to have repairs made by unsolicited contractors. Many communities have lists of those businesses that are allowed to operate in the city, and always contact your insurance company. You should get an invoice for repairs done and pay the contractor directly, never sign an insurance check over to anyone. If you have any doubt, do not agree or sign anything and call the police.
