MENDOTA – The Mendota City Council on Monday approved a proposed amendment to the city municipal code to allow beehives. In July the matter was first brought forward by residents interested in having hives. The ordinance was passed by a vote of 5-3.
Residents will be allowed one beehive with the city limits of a species approved by the State of Illinois Bees and Apiaries Act. The colonies will need to be kept as far from lot lines as possible behind a five foot barrier. All neighbors are required to sign off on the permit and insurance for liability must be held by the hive owner.
